Sweden is still increasing the number of physicians from abroad due to the shortage of gastroenterologists, among other specialists.
Gastroenterology in Sweden concerns gastrointestinal disorders, as well as hepatology (biliary tract, liver and pancreas), and the most common conditions you will find working in the Swedish healthcare system include oesophageal and gastrointestinal diseases, acute and chronic liver disease and cirrhosis, nutritional upsets, gallbladder disease and bile ducts, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastrointestinal cancer. Endoscopic examinations are important in diagnosis.
The diagnostic methods include gastroscopy and colonoscopy. In recent years, medical treatments of inflammatory bowel disease have advanced and grown as a speciality in the field of diagnosis.
